Diwan of Sidi Muhammad ibn al-Habib - A Spiritual Legacy

Diwan of Sidi Muhamamd ibn al-Habib

The Diwan

One of the most profound and enduring legacies of Sidi Muhammad ibn al-Habib is his Diwan, titled:

بُغْيَةُ المُرِيدِينَ السَّائِرِينَ وَتُحْفَةُ السَّالِكِينَ العَارِفِينَ

“Bughyat al-Murideen as-Saa'ireen wa Tuhfat as-Salikeen al-‘Arifeen”

“The Desire of the Journeying Murids and the Gift to the Wayfaring Gnostics.”

This Diwan serves as both a guide for the seeker and a gift for the gnostic, featuring exceptional Diwan poetry written in eloquent classical Arabic that resonates with readers at every level. It is renowned for its unique balance, uniting the outward practices of Shariah with the inner realities of Haqiqah, harmonizing law and spiritual truth in a way that is both accessible and deeply profound.

The complete Diwan opens with Sheikh Muhammad ibn al-Habib’s powerful introduction, in which he speaks of the idhn, the spiritual authorization he received from Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and the Awliya of Allah. He describes how Allah singled him out with gifts of knowledge and unveiling found only among the elect of the Muhammadan path.

Following the introduction, the Diwan presents the Noble Wird, one of the most comprehensive and spiritually potent litanies of our time. Compiled by the Sheikh from Quranic verses, prophetic invocations, and blessed supplications, this Wird has been recited daily by individuals and communities for nearly a century. It continues to be practiced across the world, transmitted through authentic chains of permission (idhn) from the Sheikh.

The Diwan then transitions into a treasury of Qasa'id (poems) composed primarily by Sidi Muhammad ibn al-Habib. These poems are rich with Quranic references, prophetic teachings, and the wisdom of the saints, offering practical instruction for seekers on the path of Tasawwuf. They are sung in gatherings worldwide, celebrated for their beauty, depth, and transformative power. Among the most beloved is the famous qasida:

“Nahnu fi Rawdati Rasūli - We are present in the meadow of the Messenger.”

These poems, recognized throughout North Africa, West Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, have become anthems of the path and a spiritual lifeline for countless hearts.

Today, the most complete and carefully curated edition of the Diwan includes:
